Part of being a humorist is in seeing the funny in any situation. In my novel, I Left My Brains in San Francisco, I used the old Nigerian Scam email to inspire an unimpressive college student to become one of the greatest environmental terrorists of the 2040s. In my day job, I write serious reviews of products for Top Ten Reviews, but that doesn’t mean I don’t apply my humor elsewhere.
Last month, I got a spam email to my work address. The “gentleman” in question, in impeccably polite, broken English, informed me he’d seen my professional profile and thought I was the most beautiful woman I’d ever seen, and that he was “in need of woman.” I sent it to my managing editor with the note, “Should I tell him to go through the Requests Department?” The letter and my reply made it to our team meeting, along with the possible profile of the person who sent it. If he’s not a terrorist, he’s definitely into the paramilitary scene. My editor joking suggested exchanging photos would probably be a bad idea.
I protested, “But I was going to email him about how excited I was to meet in person, if he’d only send me his bank account information…”
Later that day, I got a $15 bonus for my quick wit. Yes, I am quite possibly the only person in the history of the Internet to make money off receiving a spam proposition.
