Fury-cover

I love everything to do with the serials of old like Flash Gordon and Tom Mix. They’re pulpy and full of campy danger. But I also love Romance and Space Opera. So I thought, “Why not squish my serial love together with a romance in a space opera?” Not too much of a tall order? Maybe?

So, my first self published novel is being released as a serial because it has elements of pulpy campy scifi traditionally done in serial format and I wanted to stay true to genre. Also, it’s my first time self publishing and I wanted to learn the platform and the business while having fun and growing an audience of readers who love space opera, romance and pulpy goodness. I didn’t want to make expensive mistakes that could turn off that potential audience.

A serial is enjoyed in small “lunchbox” sized bites for today’s busy commuting reader. Each release has a part of the larger story but there is always a conflict to be resolved before the cliffhanger starts us onto the next problem.

I’m a long time fan of Lois McMasters Bujold’s Vorkosigan Saga, Doc Savage books, Star Wars, David Weber’s Honor Harrington series, and Mercedes Lackey. I wrote collaborative FanFic for years in the Star Trek genre as an award winning group leader in various genres on the internet from Fantasy to SciFi to horror. I enjoyed it so much and was encouraged by everyone I wrote with to “write your stories!”  That was the big scary step, to stop writing fanfic and start writing in my worlds, the worlds I’d been building on my own. Eep!

Fury-seriesFreedom Bound is part of a larger series, Solar Flame, set in the same universe with the central characters being “Bodice Ripping Ninjas in Space”. In Solar Flame, I buck the stereotypical romance heroine and put forth a strong independent female character. And you know what? I think SciFiRomance is a genre where my highly capable characters can live. The worldbuild has been percolating in my brain and in dozens of notebooks for years. It’s fully formed and wants to break out!

Bodice Ripping Ninjas in Space! Freedom Bound is Firefly meets Buck Rogers with a bit of boudoir

Welcome to the Solar Flame universe where corporate suzerains control our heroines’ lives. How do they win sovereignty over their own lives and their loves? In Freedom Bound, Corrie Scott, late of Frobisher Corporation finds herself unleashed in enemy territory alone for the first time in her life. But she is plagued by the threat of corporate slavery. She is thrown together with the devilishly handsome Mat Parker. Relying on each other, they must battle through ridiculous red tape, space pirates, and backstabbing double crosses. Can they trust each other long enough to win this dangerous game?

I think serial novels are a fantastic concept that is finally coming back into the light again. The Victorians waited months to collect whole manuscripts, and serial television has always been more fun and detailed than the movies. I haven’t read much of it – the Green Mile when that came out, a lot of serial fan-fiction – but I’m looking forward to Jayne’s.
